EL MONTE, Calif. (AP) — Police have arrested a man they say set fire to a cross and threw a Molotov cocktail at an El Monte church while high on drugs.
The San Gabriel Valley Tribune says the cross was only singed and thechurch escaped damage in Tuesday's attack.
Authorities say the man told police he'd been using methamphetamines for about three days and wanted to light a fire. Cpl. David Avalos says the man knew the cross next to New Hope Community Church was wood.
Firefighters doused the cross and police say they found three Molotov cocktails at the scene, including two that went out before reaching their target.
Twenty-eight-year-old Alexander Basham of El Monte was arrested on suspicion of vandalism and attempted arson of a church.
He remains jailed.
