LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A man suspected of using a sword to kill a woman in front of her children in Lancaster in 2008 was in sheriff's custody today after being returned to the U.S. from Mexico, authorities said.

Jesus ``Chuey'' Canales, 34, a native of El Salvador, was detained by Mexican authorities on Thursday after he was found to be living in Jalisco, Mexico, and turned over to U.S. Marshals, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Canales, who was wanted on a felony arrest warrant alleging murder and child endangerment in connection with the July 12, 2008 killing of victim Lucy Preciado, was flown to Los Angeles International Airport on Friday and taken into custody by sheriff's homicide detectives, authorities said.

He was booked early this morning into the Century Regional Detention Center in Lynwood and is due for arraignment on Monday in Antelope Valley Superior Court in Lancaster, according to the sheriff's department.

Canales' case had been presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office on July 16, 2008 and a felony warrant for his arrest, with bail set at $1.4 million, was obtained at that time, officials said.
