Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca spent his last few hours in office handing out service awards to deputies and detectives at the Sheriff's Headquarters building in Monterey Park.

A spokesman said Baca wanted to leave quietly around noon, when he officially retires after 48 years of service.

The interim Sheriff selected by the Board of Supervisors will be sworn-in at 2 p.m.
