The Hollywood Forever Cemetery says a monument commemorating Confederate veterans has been removed after hundreds of people emailed and called the cemetery complaining about the monument.
The owner of the monument, the Long Beach chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy initially told the media they wouldn't remove the marker. However, the owners reportedly had a change of heart overnight and the 6-foot monument was removed.
Hollywood Forever officials say grave markers where more than 30 Confederate veterans and their families are buried, will remain in place.
The monument, erected in 1925, was removed following violence that erupted over the weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia at a white supremacist rally. The city ordered the removal of a Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee statue removed, which has sparked a national debate about similar monuments.
The Los Angeles Times says hundreds of phone calls and emails poured into the cemetery's office asking for the monument's removal.
