After being deported to Mexico more than a decade ago, a U.S. veteran and immigration activist is being reunited with his family in California. Family and friends held a welcome home ceremony for Hector Barajas in Compton yesterday. Barajas served in the U.S. military and had green card status, but was deported in 2002.
While in Mexico, he created a safe house called "The Bunker" for other displaced U.S. Veterans needing healthcare, PTSD counseling and other services. Congresswoman Nanette Barragan and Governor Jerry Brown helped secure Barajas' return as a U.S. citizen.
