Second Day of Summer Brings the Heat

LOS ANGELES - High temperatures will reach 99 in the Santa Clarita Valley and 107 in the Antelope Valley today -- the second day of summer and the third and hottest day of L.A. County's hot spell.

But despite the high heat, the result of high pressure aloft, temperatures will not be hugely above normal -- around normal at the coast, about 5 degrees above normal in the San Fernando Valley, 10 degrees above normal in Downtown L.A. and 10-15 degrees above normal in the Antelope Valley, where highs of 107 are expected today, said National Weather Service meteorologist Rich Thompson.

Today will be the hottest day of the hot spell that began earlier this week and will be followed by a cooloff starting Saturday, he said.

The NWS forecast mostly partly cloudy skies in L.A. County today and highs of 70 in Avalon; 73 at LAX; 77 in Long Beach; 80 in downtown L.A.; 87 in San Gabriel and Burbank; 89 in Pasadena; 95 in Woodland Hills; 99 in Saugus; and 107 in Palmdale and Lancaster.

Partly cloudy and sunny skies were forecast in Orange County, along with highs of 68 in San Clemente; 70 in Newport Beach; 72 in Laguna Beach; 80 in Anaheim and Irvine; 83 in Fullerton; 86 in Yorba Linda; and 87 in Mission Viejo.
