SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man riding on a Greyhound bus on Interstate 5 in the University City area stabbed a fellow passenger in the neck today, then jumped out of the moving vehicle and fled onto the nearby campus of UC San Diego, where a man matching his description was arrested.
The assault in the northbound transit coach was reported shortly before 12:30 p.m., according to San Diego police.
Following the attack, the assailant jumped out of the bus, rolling across the freeway before bolting to the west across the northbound and southbound lanes, SDPD Officer Steve Bourasa said.
Medics took the victim to Scripps Memorial Hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries, CHP public-affairs Officer Jim Bettencourt said.
A witness, meanwhile, reported seeing the suspected stabber fleeing near an office building on the east side of the UCSD campus.
Officers surrounded the area and searched for the man, described only as a 20- to 30-year-old Latino in sunglasses. Within about an hour of the assault, police had arrested a suspect on the grounds of the university. The man's name and details on a possible motive for the attack were not immediately available.
