Two Sewage Spills Close Ocean Access in Newport Beach

SANTA ANA (CNS) - A portion of bay water area in Newport Beach was declared off-limits to beachgoers today due to a pair of sewage spills, officials said. Water access from Upper Newport Bay to North Star Beach was shut down because of the sewage spills, said Anthony Martinez of the OC Health Care Agency.

A sewer main break in Costa Mesa on Monday morning led to a 7,500-gallon spill, and a private sewer lateral blockage in Santa Ana on Saturday led to a second spill of about another 7,500 gallons, Martinez said.

The affected area will remain closed to ocean water-contact sports until the results of follow-up water quality monitoring meet acceptable standards, according to the HCA.
