Man Arrested On Suspicion Of Drunk Driving In Crash That Kills Four People

SANTA ANA (CNS) - Four people were killed and one of the drivers, who was hospitalized in critical condition, has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving in connection with a two-vehicle traffic crash in Santa Ana.

"Manslaughter charges could be added," said Cpl. Anthony Bertagna of the Santa Ana Police Department.

Authorities were notified of the crash at Fourth Street and Tustin Avenue at 2:30 a.m., Bertagna said.

A black Jeep going westbound collided with a white Chevrolet pickup truck that had been going southbound on Tustin Avenue, he said.

``Both vehicles flipped over multiple times," he said. ``The driver of the Jeep got out his vehicle, at the same time an off-duty firefighter and nurse were at the scene."

The off-duty firefighter was able to put out the fire and the nurse, his wife, rendered aid to the man driving the Jeep, who also the lone occupant inside his vehicle, he said.

The Jeep driver was transported to an area hospital in critical condition, Bertagna said, and the four people inside the pickup were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Tustin Avenue and Fourth Street are closed indefinitely while the investigation continues.
