ICE Deported Widower Of U.S. Soldier Killed In Afghanistan

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement deported the widower of a soldier who was killed in 2010 by insurgents while she was serving in Afghanistan. Jose Gonzalez Carranza came to the United States illegally when he was a teenager in 2004 and married Army Pfc. Barbara Vieyra three years later.

After Vierya was killed in Afghanistan Carranza was granted "parole in place," which allowed him to remain in the United States without fear of being deported.

In 2018, ICE refiled a deportation order against Carranza and sent a notice to his old address. Carranza had no idea he was facing deportation and missed a scheduled court hearing. He was arrested on April 8th and was deported to Nogales, Mexico just two days later.

When the news of Carranza's deportation broke, officials allowed him to return to the United States while he awaits a new hearing on his immigration status.
