'Maleficent' Has Magnificent Opening Weekend To Lead Box Office

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - In a battle of colorful villains, Disney's “Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil” knocked off “Joker” at the box office this weekend, opening with $36 million to lead all films at North American theaters, according to industry estimates released today.

“Joker” was second with $29.2 million in its third week of release, Comscore reported.

“Zombieland 2: Double Tap” opened in third place with an estimated $26.7 million, followed by “The Addams Family” with $16 million and “Gemini Man with $8.5 million.

Rounding out the top 10 films of the weekend were “Abominable” ($3.5 million), “Downton Abbey” ($3 million), “Judy” ($2 million), “Hustlers” ($2 million) and “It Chapter Two” ($1.5 million).
