Driver Flees, Passenger Hurt Escaping Vehicle in Pursuit

A passenger's leg was severed Monday morning while attempting to get out of a possible stolen car being chased by police in Koreatown.

The chase began early Monday morning and ended at around 2:10 a.m. around Seventh and Berendo streets, Officer D. Orris of the Los Angeles Police Department's Operation's Center said. Officers patrolling the neighborhood spotted the allegedly stolen vehicle and tried to pull the driver over, who took off. Officials say at one point, the passenger attempted to roll out of the car during the chase which only lasted for a few blocks. The passenger was dragged for a short distance and their leg severed.

The chase ended with a crash into as many as seven parked cars, police said.

The driver abandoned the vehicle and police are currently searching the area. A description was not made available.

The passenger was taken to a local hospital for surgery.
