Defund No More, Portland’s Mayor Now Wants More Cops

Portland’s Mayor Ted Wheeler in 2020: Defunds police forcing the elimination of the gun violence reduction team.

Mayor Wheeler in 2021: with violent crime surging, “we do not have adequate resources deployed on our streets... I will fight for additional resources for the police bureau”.

Back in September of last year, Wheeler was blaming Trump for the riots and violence in the city while vowing to join with BLM is defunding the police.

In announcing his plan last year to defund the Portland Police department which resulted in the disbanding of three police units including the gun violence reduction team, Wheeler implied that the department was racist.

He said “my privilege as a white man, my privilege as the mayor and the leader of the institutions of power in this community I believe shielded me from time to time from the many difficult and uncomfortable truths about our history and about our society.”

He added, that to the hundreds of people out on the streets demanding he defund police, “I hear you, I see you and I’m going to be with you all the way” as he announced his support for cutting the police budget by $15 million which also eliminated 84 positions.

Well, Trump is no longer president and the violence and occasional rioting continues.

In fact, violent gun crimes has surged.

Think that has something to do with the fact that he disbanded the gun violence reduction team?

Now Wheeler wants more money for police, saying “it is obvious from where I sit that we do not have adequate resources deployed on our streets in a proactive way…”

He adds that in an effort to make Downtown safer, he's looking at ways to bring more officers in from surrounding precincts.

Wheeler says “I will fight for additional resources for the police bureau, I will fight for more police officers and I will fight for more tools and whatever support the police bureau needs to get its job done.”

Of course he says that now, but when the next George Floyd case comes along, he’ll be back regurgitating BLM talking points in his attacks on police.
