(Lafayette, CA) -- A controversial war cross memorial dotting a hillside in Lafayette could be removed. The Clark family, who owns the land where the memorial sits, say they are selling the property. The family offered the land to the city, but only if they kept the cross memorial.
Citing First Amendment conflicts, the city declined the offer saying if they took control of the land, the crosses would have to come down. Since then, a potential buyer has emerged and says they would like to replace the crosses with a permanent memorial.
However, many city residents say they have grown attached the thousands of crosses on a hill near the Lafayette BART station. The memorial has been a flash point of controversy between those who argue its presence hurts the morale of active service members and others who oppose the wars in the Middle East.
