LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Firefighters from Southland agencies remained in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties today to assist in efforts to contain what has grown into the fifth largest wildfire in modern California history, authorities said.
The Thomas Fire started in Ventura County Monday and has consumed 230,000 acres as a result of high winds. It is only 10 percent contained and now threatens structures in Santa Barbara County, fire officials said.
The blaze has destroyed 790 structures, damaged 191 more and threatened 18,000, officials said.
More than 5,770 firefighters are battling the fire, confronting a continuation of low humidity levels and extreme fire behavior resulting in part from the wind, officials said.
