Iraq Reports Low Voter Turnout in First Election Since ISIS Defeat

Iraqi Officials Report Low Voter Turnout

Iraqi officials are reporting a low voter turnout in the first parliamentary elections since defeating ISIS.

Iraq's election commission announced a turnout of less than 45 percent, down from 60 percent who cast ballots in the last elections in 2014.

Officials had worried that threats of terror attacks from the remnants of ISIS would keep voters from the polls.

However, there were no major security problems reported as polls closed.  Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi is being challenged by two main candidates in his bid for re-election.
