A dangerous sideshow took over a South Los Angeles street early Monday morning (May 2). According to KTLA, a large crowd gathered for the street takeover at about 1:30 A.M. in the area of Wester Avenue and Imperial Highway. Vehicles were seen racing by in circles in the intersections, leaving skid marks on the roads. One video captured a frightening moment when one car nearly plowed into a crowd of onlookers. Luckily, the driver was able to stop before coming too close to the people standing near the edge of the sidewalk.
KTLA reports the chaotic takeover occurred in a typically quiet and residential area. This is just one instance of a recent trend in wild street takeovers in South L.A. Last month, there were reportedly three takeovers within the same week. Several vehicles were seen flying around the intersection and nearly hitting the crowds that gather to watch. One takeover in mid-March at Manchester and San Pedro drew over 200 spectators before police arrived, according to FOX LA.
No injuries from the sideshows have been reported so far. Authorities are considering harsher measures to crack down on the increased activity including up to 6 months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
