LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Legendary opera singer Placid Domingo, who has been accused by multiple women of sexual misconduct, has withdrawn from a cultural festival planned in conjunction with the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, organizers said Friday, according to The Japan Times.

The 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralytic organizing committee said the renowned Spanish singer and conductor will no longer appear alongside kabuki actor Ichikawa Ebizo in a stage show combining the two performing arts.

“This decision was made by Maestro Domingo after thoughtful consideration,” the committee said in a statement, The Japan Times reported.

The Associated Press reported in August that a score of women said they were sexually harassed by Domingo in incidents dating from the 1980s. The accusations have led to the cancellation of a number of planned opera performances involving Domingo, including by the Met in New York. Then, in early October, Domingo resigned as general director of the L.A. Opera, the company that he helped found and that he led for more than 15 years.

“After thoughtful consideration I have made the decision not to participate in the kabuki-Opera event due to the complexity of the project,” Domingo said in a statement released through the Tokyo organizing committee, never mentioning the sexual-harassment controversy.
