4.9 Magnitude Quake Hits Near Anza; No Reports of Damage or Injuries

ANZA (CNS) - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.9 with an epicenter 10 miles south-southeast of Anza struck tonight, followed by a series of aftershocks, according to the United States Geological Survey.

There were no reports of damage or injuries as of 7:25 p.m., Riverside County Sheriff's Department Deputy Robyn Flores told City News Service.

There were at least seven aftershocks, the largest with a preliminary magnitude of 3.6 at 7:05 p.m., the USGS reported.

The earthquake on the San Jacinto Fault caused strong and moderate shaking within Riverside County and sent weak shaking into Orange, San Bernardino, Los Angeles and San Diego counties, according to the USGS.

The counties with weak shaking did not have any risk of damage, the USGS reported.

“The San Jacinto Fault, which had the (earthquake) this evening, is the most active fault in California. It has more small earthquakes every year than others,” Julian Lozos, an assistant professor of geology at Cal State Northridge, tweeted.

“This kind of thing is pretty usual behavior!”
