LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The Los Angeles Community College District has reopened enrollment for its College Promise program -- which offers free tuition and guaranteed admission to first-time, full-time students – through Sept. 15 for the fall semester.
The program is open to any first-time college student who enrolls full-time, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, social or economic background or immigration status.
“Today we are removing another obstacle for students so they can achieve their educational dreams,'' LACCD Board of Trustees President Andra Hoffman said. “We found out that many new students wanted to participate, but due to the pandemic and other issues, they missed the original application deadline. We listened to you. We want you. And we're excited to now welcome all who want to join us as L.A. College Promise students for the fall semester.''
Students in the program are guaranteed admission and offered free tuition during their two-year, full-time enrollment. Other benefits include a free Chromebook for remote learning, assistance with financial and emergency aid assistance and priority academic and career counseling.
“Our L.A. College Promise program gives students a clear path to completing their educational goals within two years, whether it's gaining skills for work through a short-term career education certificate or transferring to a four-year institution for a bachelor's degree -- start with us!'' LACCD Chancellor Francisco Rodriguez said. “With guaranteed admission, priority registration and superbly dedicated faculty and staff combined with flexible schedules, technology and support systems, students can begin and achieve their dreams right here.''
Promise students can attend any of LACCD's nine colleges: East Los Angeles College, Los Angeles City College, Los Angeles Harbor College, Los Angeles Mission College, Los Angeles Pierce College, Los Angeles Southwest College, Los Angeles Trade-Technical College. Los Angeles Valley College and West Los Angeles College.
The current incoming class for the fall 2020 semester includes the district's fourth cohort of about 5,000 Promise students, plus about 3,000 students starting their second year. More than 16,000 students have enrolled since the program began in 2017 at L.A. College as a one-year opportunity. It has since been expanded to two full years and adopted by all California community colleges.
