ENCINO (CNS) - A motorist in a box truck led authorities on a short, slow-speed chase today that ended when the driver stopped on an Encino freeway, sat down on the roadway and smoked a cigarette until he was taken into custody.

The unidentified motorist apparently was involved in a hit-and-run crash around midday on the San Diego (405) Freeway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers followed by the box truck onto the northbound Ventura (101) Freeway into the Encino area, where the driver came to a stop near Hayvenhurst Avenue. The motorist appeared agitated inside the cab of the truck, but eventually exited from the passenger-side door. He then walked to the center of the freeway and sat down, smoking a cigarette.

A trio of officers slowly moved toward him, with guns drawn, and the driver was taken into custody without incident.

All lanes of the northbound freeway were blocked while police took the man into custody.
