For the first time in history, the WWE Championship was transferred from one Black wrestler to another Black wrestler. This historic moment was set into motion in July when Ettore "Big E" Ewen won the "Money In The Bank" main event at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. Nearly two months later, Big E woke up, logged into Twitter and sent a message to the world.

"Let’s let that cat out of the bag. I intend on cashing in my Money in the Bank contract tonight...to become WWE Champion," Big E tweeted on Monday morning.

Big E's tweet was met with the same amount of surprise and excitement that many would expect. Hours later, he fulfilled his promise to his fans during Monday Night Raw. The main event kicked off with then-WWE Champion Bobby Lashley taking on Randy Orton. Lashley was able to take down Orton, but Big E popped up to give him another challenge. Unable to defend his title a second time, Big E took down Lashley with a monumental finish. Immediately after winning the title, the new champion took to Twitter to celebrate his win.

Big E has been building up to this moment for more than a decade. In 2013, he won the WWE NXT title in 2013 and helped build up The New Day. After building up The New Day for nearly a decade, he separated from the trio in 2020 and returned to his solo career. Things reached a tipping point in 2021 when he won the "Money In The Bank" main event and set himself up for the WWE Championship.
