LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Mayor Karen Bass is expected to attend Tuesday's inauguration of Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo as president of Mexico during ceremonies in Mexico City.

Bass was to fly to the Mexican capital on Monday night, departing from Washington, D.C. following a White House celebration of Team USA for its achievements at the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games. President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden were on hand for the celebration.

Bass had flown to Washington on Sunday, and is expected to return to Los Angeles Wednesday, her office said.

In June, Sheinbaum -- the candidate of the Morena party, Labor Party and the Ecological Green party of Mexico -- received 33.2 million votes, or 59.4%, which was more than double her opponent, Xóchitl Gálvez, candidate for the Democratic Revolution Party.

Sheinbaum, the former mayor of Mexico City, will be Mexico's first woman president.

In a statement congratulating Sheinbaum on her election win, Bass recalled meeting the president-elect in October 2023.

"I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Sheinbaum in Los Angeles, where we spoke about our shared priorities and the ongoing strong relationship between Los Angeles and Mexico," Bass said.

"I look forward to Los Angeles' continued partnership with Mexico as we continue to create safer and more equitable communities for those we serve."
