With the REAL ID deadline approaching, some DMV offices in Southern California are extending their hours to accommodate the surge of applicants. Starting May 7, U.S. travelers over 18 will need a REAL ID or another form of identification, such as a passport, to board domestic flights. To help meet the demand, select DMV offices will open an hour earlier on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays until June 27.
The early openings will be at locations including Thousand Oaks, Van Nuys, Arleta, Glendale, Pasadena, Culver City, Westminster, Costa Mesa, San Clemente, and Rancho Cucamonga. These early hours are reserved exclusively for REAL ID appointments.
To apply for a REAL ID, individuals must provide proof of identity, a Social Security number, and proof of California residency. The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) recommends starting the application process online to streamline the in-person visit.
The federal REAL ID Act sets new standards for identification used to board flights and enter secure federal facilities. A California-issued REAL ID driver’s license or identification card meets these requirements and is marked with a golden bear and star. According to the California DMV, if you do not plan to travel, you can obtain a REAL ID when you renew your driver's license or ID card.
The REAL ID is optional, but without it or another federally accepted form of identification, travelers will not be able to board domestic flights or access certain federal facilities after May 7, 2025.
