The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has announced a significant rehabilitation project for the 405 Freeway, targeting the stretch from Van Nuys to Westwood through the Sepulveda Pass. Scheduled to begin in spring or summer 2025, the project aims to enhance safety and improve mobility along this crucial corridor, which serves as a key route between West Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley.

Caltrans plans to invest approximately $143.7 million over four years to rehabilitate the freeway. The project will cover a 10.2-mile stretch, replacing sections of two lanes in each direction from Victory Boulevard to Mulholland Drive, and repairing other lanes to extend pavement life. Additional improvements include the restoration of two overhead sign structures, the replacement of 98 sign panels, and upgrades to guardrails and ADA curb ramps.

Construction is expected to be completed by winter 2029. During this time, residents and businesses near the construction area may experience noise, vibrations, and dust. Caltrans advises checking the Caltrans Quickmap for current road conditions and closures. Drivers are reminded to "Be Work Zone Alert" and "Slow for the Cone Zone."

Caltrans will hold a virtual public meeting on Thursday (April 24) at 6 p.m. to discuss the project and answer questions. Interested individuals can register online to attend the meeting. According to Caltrans, the project will include 22 extended partial weekend closures over four years, lasting from Friday night to Monday morning. These closures will not occur during holidays or special events, and detour routes will be clearly marked.
