Eduardo Roberto Medina-Berumen, 22, remains hospitalized under guard after being accused of fatally shooting a police officer and a civilian in Baldwin Park. The incident occurred on Saturday, when officers responded to reports of gunfire on Filhurst Avenue. Medina-Berumen allegedly opened fire, striking Officer Samuel Riveros, who later died from his injuries, and Officer Anthony Pimentel, who has since been released from the hospital.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Medina-Berumen has been booked on suspicion of two counts of murder, with bail set at $4 million. He is expected to be transferred to a jail facility upon release from the hospital. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is investigating the motive behind the shootings, and the District Attorney's Office is involved in the case.
The initial call reported a man firing a rifle in the street. As KTLA reports, upon arrival, officers were met with gunfire from Medina-Berumen. A civilian, found with gunshot wounds at the scene, was also pronounced dead at the hospital. The suspect's father, Eduardo Medina, expressed disbelief over the incident, noting that his son had been acting strangely in recent months.
The community is mourning the loss of Officer Riveros, 35, of Pasadena, who was described as a dedicated officer. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities urge anyone with information to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau.
A community candelight vigil for Officer Riveros will be held on Friday, June 6th at 7:20pm in the fountain area at the Baldwin Park Police Department 14403 E. Pacific Ave. in Baldwin Park.
